Protocol: SIP (Session Initiation Protocol)

 Specified by IETF SIP Working Group. It was to provide a signaling and

call setup (initiate, modify, terminate) protocol for IP-based

communications

 SIP is the next great protocol of Internet because it brings an entirely new

set of media and collaboration capabilities to applications, “converged

applications”, including instant messaging, voice/video telephony, video

conferencing, rich-media enterprise collaboration, click-to-call…

 In developing SIP-based applications and networks, it got simplicity,

interoperability, scalability, fault tolerance… rather than H.323 that has

architecture designed for “Old World”, PSTN (circuit-switched network).
